Ballintubber Abbey

Ballintubber Abbey is one of the most magical wedding venues in the country with a wealth of History and even recent Celebrity Weddings to its name. The Abbey is built on the site of a Church started by Saint Patrick in 441 AD, and it is said to be the only church in Ireland founded by a King that is still actively holding religious ceremonies.

The Westport Coast Hotel in Westport has become a destination of choice for “Ballintubber Brides”, with the Hotel’s proximity and size being a major factor in their choice. The intimacy of both venues has led to the close association between the Abbey and the Hotel which has grown over the years.

In recent years having the aisles of the church lit solely by candle light has become popular as a means of adding beauty and atmosphere to the Abbey for those very special wedding ceremonies. Ballintubber Abbey has also become popular with Celebrity Weddings and in recent years Irish Actor Pierce Brosnan had his wedding in the Abbey and also Westlife Star Shane Filan’s ceremony was held in the beautiful surroundings of Ballintubber Abbey.
